Griffiths, 24, has made 12 appearances since his debut for his country last November, having previously featured in two of Wales’s UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers earlier this year.
The Cardiff City defender will make his second World Cup appearance in Russia after coming off the bench for an hour during Wales’s 1-1 draw against Portugal on 6 June.
Having previously trained with the squad in the build-up to the EURO, Griffiths, who has represented his country at under-21 level, is now being given his first competitive call-up at senior level and becomes Wales’s first central defender in the tournament.
Griffiths has been in superb form for Cardiff City this season, making his first team debut on 14 November as he helped them reach the semi-final of the Capital One Cup at Wembley Stadium. The centre-back made his Premier League debut in April and has been involved in Cardiff’s run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Wales head coach Chris Coleman selected a young squad, with only six players making their first international appearance, against Belgium on 10 November.
Key defender Craig Bellamy was not selected by Coleman for the friendly against the visitors, while Swansea City striker Daniel James and Aston Villa midfielder Joe Allen were both absent from the squad due to injury.
Other first-time call-ups to the squad include Cardiff City full-back David Meyler and winger Hal Robson-Kanu.
