Changes in field potentials in the dentate gyrus were monitored in control rats and in rats exposed to a high-frequency stimulus after which long-term potentiation (LTP) or long-term depression (LTD) had developed. Three groups of slices were studied: those from control rats, those from rats in which LTP had been established and those in which LTD had developed. The data indicate that the response to high-frequency stimuli, when first applied, induces a long-lasting increase in the responses of granule cells, dendritic spines and synaptic inputs of dentate gyrus. Moreover, in control rats, the LTP induced by a high-frequency stimulus was blocked by the presence of the NMDA receptor antagonist, APV. The effects of a second high-frequency stimulus applied to slices after LTD induction were similar to those after LTP induction. The results suggest that the induction of LTP and LTD in the dentate gyrus is accompanied by a highly specific change in the synaptic input to granule cells.Saprotrochus costaricensis
