Thus, research and development of technologies associated with high-voltage secondary batteries have been conducted. Among them, research and development of a large capacity battery for industrial applications, which is required to have high reliability, is being conducted. As a result of these researches, a large capacity, high-voltage secondary battery capable of stably supplying power to a device having an operation voltage of from 3.5 V to 4.3 V in the near future has been desired. Particularly, a great interest has been generated in a technology of improving the safety of such a large capacity, high-voltage secondary battery to the greatest possible degree. The safety of the secondary battery includes safety during charging, safety during discharging, and safety upon overcharge or overdischarge. The technology of realizing high safety during charging is disclosed in Patent Documents 1 to 3. Specifically, Patent Document 1 discloses a technology of preventing a portion of a positive electrode from being in contact with a negative electrode. Patent Document 2 discloses a technology of improving the cycle characteristics by forming a safety control member at the time of short-circuiting between a positive electrode and a negative electrode and thereafter forming a positive electrode layer, which is to serve as the material for the positive electrode.
